AweSOM was started as a student project at the Hasso Plattner Institute. Its original creators are Arvid Heise, Matthias Kleine, and Robert Krahn. The project supervisor was Michael Haupt.
Later on, Stefan Marr experimented with it in his PhD and maintained it irregularly.
