Want programs on Start Menu (pinned or otherwise) to show sub-menus with recently-opened & pinned files

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

The feature request is exactly as described in the title -- that is to say, I (& no doubt, others) want a mod that can get programs on the Start Menu (pinned or otherwise) to show sub-menus with recently-opened & pinned files, like they did in Windows 10 & before.

Describe the solution you'd like

The solution I'd like, is depicted in the screenshots below. (These were 'capped before my computer got upgraded to Windows 11.)

So, can that possibly be arranged? :-)

I tried asking Windhawk if they could make a mod for this, but simply put, they said this wasn't in their forte.

It works for me with current Open-Shell on Win11.

Make sure you have Enable jumplists checked in settings.
Also make sure to have jump lists enabled in Windows settings:

Basically if official Windows start menu shows them, Open-Shell should too (as it uses standard system mechanism to obtain them).

Oh, don't worry, I've enabled both of them. :-) But I currently can't get the jump lists in the Start Menu to come on for my pinned & recent apps, but for two apps -- Windows Media Player & Microsoft Word -- & Microsoft Word only lists the files I recently opened &/or saved in Onedrive, & not on my actual hard drive. :-( See here:

As to those parts of the issue, what do you suggest I do to correct them?

But more to the point, I'm thinking more along the lines of the lists having the visual appearance a la Windows Vista-10, & showing up in their own pop-up submenus (instead of a side pane next to the programs list). You know what I'm saying?

I'm afraid I don't understand the question. ^^;; But even more importantly, I did a little tinkering with the registry with the help of some tutorials, & also used Vivetool, & the jump lists are back again exactly the way I want them! ^_^

There's only ONE last issue that still needs fixing, though: I can't get the jump lists to come on for Classic Notepad, Paint, & Wordpad. :-( I wonder what I should do about that...

Because if they are not in standard Start menu then there is some other issue and Open-Shell won't display them either.

Oh! I think I do indeed see them. :-)

But what to do about the three "Classic" apps I installed? I'm still not seeing any jump lists for those particular programs... :-( (Which I previously established in my last response.) How can I get those jump lists for Classic Notepad, Paint, & Wordpad?

So do you see jump lists for these 3 apps in standard Windows Start menu or not?
If not, then try to open some file in these applications, close app and check if the file appears in jump list.

If the file doesn't appear in jump list then you have some problem on your machine. Try to have a look at

2. I do that constantly, but to no avail. :-(
3. I'll take a look at it, but I hope it won't mess up the Vivetool enablement of the feature. :-( Wish me luck! I'll let you know how it goes.

A few seconds later: I don't know if I mentioned this previously, but I do have "Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, & File Explorer" enabled. I looked up the info about Vivetool & enabling Start Menu jump lists, & I saw that there are two additional Vivetool commands you are recommended to do, to ensure proper functionality for the hack. I'll take care of these, & restart the computer, & let you know if the Start Menu jump lists for Classic Notepad, Paint, & Wordpad show up. :-)

In any case, if you can't see jump lists in standard Windows Start menu, then they won't show up in Open-Shell as well.
You have to fix the underlying issue first and then they should work in Open-Shell too.

Well, there are those other two recommended Vivetool options I am advised to enable, along with the one I've already done. I'll try that, & see if it works. :-) If not, maybe someone else can help, or I might try Reddit or something.
