NeogitLogCurrent fails

I'm unsure if this is my setup problem or a general problem.

If I run NeogitLogCurrent from anywhere but the root of the git directory, the log is empty. Only if neovim is run from the git root directory is the log not empty.

I'm narrowed it down to this:
neogit.llib.git.list is called in neogit/popups/log/actions.lua#17. The parse_log function returns a non-empty list of commits. But this list is empty at when I try to print it at neogit/popups/log/actions.lua#17.

Let me know what I can do to provide a more detailed log.
