Right now, a gaming group might have several people with the same name. The work around I've seen is to add either a player's initials, or some other distinguisher for how you know that person. For example, "Dan (FLGS)" vs. just-plain-"Dan".

The first step on the solution to the above would be to add a "distinguisher description" field to each player in a group — so you can have "Dan (with a beard)", "Dan (brother in law)", "Dan (friend of Joe)", and "Dan"

This works for a single person but falls apart when multiple people are trying to share a group. Maybe "Dan" is the husband of Player1, known only as "Dan"; while he is the only bearded "Dan" that Player2 knows, and Player3 is the brother of Player1 who therefore knows him as "Dan (Brother-in-law). So Dan should appear appropriately to each player with their own preferred distinguisher.
