The issue can be described at the example of EXFOR entry 30998 and subentry 002:

MONITOR   2(79-AU-197(N,G)79-AU-198,,SIG)
MONIT-REF 2(,JIANG SONSHENG,R,HSJ-77141,1978)

The function depointerfy splits each subentry into several datasets using the field values associated with a specific pointer in each of them. In the subentry above pointers are used to store both the measured reaction and the monitor reaction and ideally the link between these two should not get lost.
