This is a feature that both NeoForge and Quilt have, and I was (un)surprised to learn that Fabric didn't have it. It is such a fundamentally useful feature for mods that generate resources at runtime for compatibility with other mods (e.g. wood types), so I don't know why this shouldn't be a Fabric API feature.
