Virtual ESMValTool workshop (fall 2026) - dates fixed: Nov 24-26!!

[hb326]

Dear @ESMValGroup/esmvaltool-developmentteam,
we would like to start with the planning of our next ESMValTool workshop. It will be a three day workshop, virtual and sometime in November.
Please indicate your availability in the poll so that we can find the three days that suit most of us.
Thanks!!

Seems like the poll only accepts a single option to vote for, so if we don't have a strong preference do we not vote at all or should we make a poll on another site that allowed multiple selections?

[hb326]

Oh no! I had hoped that you can choose more than one... Maybe I have to change it.

[valeriupredoi]

I tried to, but then it yelled at me "updating the poll is a DESTRUCTIVE action" so I 🐔 out

[hb326]

Ok, I changed the things around a little. I could not change the category of the post anymore, so I had to keep "a" poll in the end...

[valeriupredoi]

It's biutiful! Analog and oldschool like me, plus it's not angry at me anymore

[jlenh]

Sorry for my minimalist contribution to the poll 😅 I put a question mark ? as a tentative option as I might have an institute event at some of the dates!

[valeriupredoi]

just don't write "maybe" because that means "no" in British 😁

[hb326]

Hey all @ESMValGroup/esmvaltool-developmentteam,
last chance to indicate your availability for the next ESMValTool virtual workshop in fall! Poll closes next week!

[bettina-gier]

any news? I'm getting pestered for a seminar talk in November so would be great to know the dates!

[hb326]

All right, @ESMValGroup/esmvaltool-developmentteam,
you have chosen.

The virtual workshop will be held on Nov 24-26!
Save the dates!!

[bouweandela]

Awesome! Will you be sending out a calendar invitation to the mailing list, so we can easily block the days in our calendars?

[bouweandela]

Here are some ideas for topics:

• @rbeucher offered to share lessons learned from converting NCL recipes to Python using AI, e.g. how to review and trust such developments.
• @valeriupredoi suggested that it would be good to have a Q&A session where we help people out with their Pixi questions

[katjaweigel]

I would suggest that we check, which recipes can easily be updated from CMIP5 to CMIP6 or even CMIP7 (and are worth to maintain). Else we'll have a huge pile of non working recipes in the next release, because DKRZ started to delete CMIP5 data to make space for CMIP7. (Is this the same on JASMIN?)

[bouweandela]

Official message about CMIP5 at DKRZ:

Dear users,

with upcoming major climate simulation initiatives such as CMIP7, we expect new data volumes on the order of petabytes (PB) to be published in our data pool. To accommodate this growth, we need to free up storage space on the file system (/work).

We will start this cleanup effort by removing 400 TB of CMIP5 data on 22.08.2026. This dataset is now over 10 years old, and less than 2% of it was accessed in the past year. Please note that further cleanup rounds targeting older or low-usage datasets from other projects will follow.

/pool/data/CMIP5/data/cmip5/output1/MPI-M | 77.1 TiB
/pool/data/CMIP5/data/cmip5/output1/NCAR │ 38.3 TiB
/pool/data/CMIP5/data/cmip5/output1/MIROC │ 36.3 TiB
/pool/data/CMIP5/data/cmip5/output1/CSIRO-BOM │ 34.7 TiB
/pool/data/CMIP5/data/cmip5/output1/NASA-GISS │ 33.2 TiB

Continued Access via WDCC: The data will remain fully preserved and accessible through our long-term archive, the World Data Center for Climate (WDCC). If you require these datasets for ongoing or future work, you can easily access and download them from the repository.

Thank you for your cooperation as we prepare our infrastructure for the next generation of climate simulation projects.

Best regards,
DKRZ

Apparently, there is an option for continued access, but I have not investigated it yet. But anyway, it would be good to update still-relevant recipes to CMIP7 so they stay relevant.

[katjaweigel]

I haven't tested it either, but I'm afraid it means downloading data, eventually from band storage, which is slow (and you need a place to store them, /scratch on Levante would probably work but is automatically cleared after 2 weeks).

[katjaweigel]

So maybe we can use this, were it would be good to keep CMIP5 (e.g. intercomparisons of the CMIP phases) but in many recipes it would be better to change to CMIP6 or CMIP7 also because users are often more interested in the more recent data sets?
